Unzen Autumn Nighttime Foliage Viewing

A Unique Japanese Experience

Autumn in Japan is one of the most beautiful seasons of the year, and one of the highlights is momijigari, or “autumn leaves viewing.” While many countries admire fall foliage, Japan has a unique tradition: enjoying the leaves at night under special illumination.

Last year, I visited the mountains of Unzen City, about an hour’s drive from Nagasaki City, to experience this magical autumn event. The brilliant red and golden leaves were illuminated by soft lights, creating an atmosphere that was both peaceful and breathtaking. Strolling through the crisp evening air, surrounded by glowing maple trees, felt like walking through a painting.

This nighttime foliage viewing is a seasonal event in many parts of Japan, but Unzen is particularly special because of its mountain scenery and fresh air. It’s a beautiful way to experience Japanese culture and nature together.

For travelers who love photography, autumn night illuminations are a perfect opportunity to capture Japan’s seasonal beauty from a different perspective. Whether you are visiting Nagasaki for history, food, or nature, adding a short trip to Unzen in autumn is highly recommended.
