My First Vegan Experience 🌿

It was my first time trying vegan food, and I realized that vegan culture is still not widely accepted in Japan.

Today, I’d like to write about vegan food — something I experienced for the very first time!

The guests I guided on today’s tour were vegan, and they asked me to find a restaurant that serves vegan dishes for lunch.
To be honest, I had no idea how many vegan-friendly restaurants exist in Nagasaki — but after doing some research, I found out there’s only one!
It’s a place called “Nobister,” located near Dejima.

I’m not vegetarian or vegan myself, so this was actually my first time trying vegan food.
The dishes looked beautiful and tasted very gentle, but to be honest… I still prefer meat and fish! 😅
Still, my guests seemed very happy with the meal, and seeing their smiles made me really glad.

I was quite surprised to learn that there’s only one vegan restaurant in the whole city of Nagasaki.
It made me realize that the vegan lifestyle and culture are still not very common in Japan.
For vegan travelers visiting Japan, it must be quite a challenge to find places to eat.

During the tour, my guests mentioned that they wanted to try hot pot (nabe),
and I thought it would be easy — just order vegetables and tofu, right?
But it turned out that most hot pot soups in Japan are made with chicken stock or other animal-based broth.
I called several restaurants in Nagasaki, but almost all of them were not suitable for vegans because of the soup base.

Fortunately, I finally found one restaurant that uses no animal ingredients in their broth,
so I’m planning to visit there with my guests the day after tomorrow.

This experience really opened my eyes to cultural differences in food and the diversity of eating habits around the world.
It was another meaningful day in my journey as a tour guide in Nagasaki.
