Megane Bridge: Origin of the Name

Located in the heart of Nagasaki, Megane Bridge is known as the oldest stone arch bridge in Japan. It was built in 1634 by the Chinese monk Mokusu Nyojo from Kofukuji Temple.

More than twenty stone bridges span the Nakashima River, but Megane Bridge is the most famous and is designated as an Important Cultural Property. Its name, meaning “spectacles bridge,” comes from the way the twin arches reflect in the water, creating the shape of a pair of eyeglasses. On calm days or during the evening illumination, the view is especially breathtaking.

One charming highlight is the “Heart Stone” hidden in the stone wall. Legend says that finding it brings happiness and even helps your love come true. Couples and travelers often enjoy searching for it during their visit.

The area around the bridge is always lively with visitors. Along the riverside, you’ll find traditional sweet shops, cafés, and restaurants. Trying Nagasaki’s famous treats like castella sponge cake or kakuni (braised pork) buns while strolling makes the experience even more memorable.
